My Favourite Androgynous Characters from Video Games

I really love characters that at first glance could be either a man or a woman. So I just thought I’d do a post on some of my favourites that I’ve seen in games over the years.

Are there any that you would like to add? Comment below!

Fuujin – Final Fantasy VIII

The first time I encountered Fuujin was in Kingdom Hearts 2 where she is transformed into a little kid. I thought she was a boy until my girlfriend pointed out that she does indeed have breasts. When I played Final Fantasy VIII Fuujin is er… still underage… but I have a bit of a crush on her. Even if she speaks in one word all caps sentences. RAGE.

Bugsy Pokemon HeartGold and Soulsilver

Bugsy – Pokémon (Heart)Gold & (Soul)Silver

I first encountered Bugsy when playing Pokémon HeartGold. Bugsy is a really cute little girl/boy thing. Honestly, I think I’ve so convinced myself that Bugsy is a girl, that I forget that Bugsy is actually supposed to be a “he”. In fact, if I remember correctly in the Pokémon Manga, Bugsy is indeed mistaken for a girl, so…

Roark Pokemon Diamon Pearl and Platinum

Roark – Pokémon Diamond & Pearl

Well, Roark appears in Pokémon Platinum as well. Anyway. Roark is in a similar situation to Bugsy. When I first fought … him … I really thought that he was a girl. A really cute girl. So every time I think about Roark, Roark is a “she” in my head. I have a hard time remembering that it’s not actually true.

Cress Pokemon Black and White

Cress – Pokémon Black & White

What is it with early gym leaders looking like girls when they’re actually boys? Welcome to Pokémon White everyone. This is Cress. His two brothers look pretty boyish, but Cress looks pretty-boy-ish, if you know what I mean.

Burgh Pokemon Black and White

Burgh – Pokémon Black & White

I’m sorry, but Burgh looks like a 70s housewife. I have an easy time remembering that Burgh is a man but… not a much easier time. Bug trainers, HONESTLY!

Cheren Pokemon Black and White

Cheren – Pokémon Black & White

Wow, Pokémon Black & White you have a LOT of boys that look like girls! Firstly, I would like you to note that Whitney (definitely a girl) wears the same top as Cheren:

Whitney Pokemon Gold and Silver

And THEN! In Black and White 2! Look what Cheren transforms into! A CUTE GIRL!

Cheren Pokemon Black 2 & White 2

Cheren boggles my mind!

Naoto Shirogane

Naoto – Persona 4

Spoilers: Naoto is a girl who is disguised as a boy, and kind of wants to be a boy. I have a bit of a crush on Naoto which is a bad thing because Naoto is wayyyy too young for me. The whole point of Naoto’s character is to give you pause as to what her sex is. However, the voice acting kind of gives it away… I love Naoto.

Akihiko Sanada Persona 3

Akihiko – Persona 3

Akihiko, although quite masculine, and I’d never truely mistake him for a girl… I can’t help but think he looks like a little lesbian. Which is really cute. I really like him a lot. I love Persona 3 a lot.

Rhyme TWEWY The World Ends With You

Rhyme – The World Ends With You

But I truely love TWEWY. In fact, when you first meet Rhyme, I thought she was a boy. True story. I think it could just be kids in video games look pretty… asexual, but hey. I like Rhyme, she is awesome.

Tam Lin Persona

Tam Lin – Shin Megami Tensei & Persona Series

Tam Lin really looks like a female version of Cú Chulainn. But Tam Lin is based on a Scottish hero who is… male. Well, it wouldn’t be the first time a Japanese game has gotten the sex of a mythical person incorrect.

Shiva Summon Final Fantasy X

Final Fantasy like to make Shiva into a sexy lady but Shiva is usually portrayed as…

Shiva Hindu God

Yep, a Hindu GOD. Even Shin Megami Tensei got this one right.

Shiva Shin Megami Tensei

Ron DeLite Ace Attorney

Ron DeLite – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Trials and Tribulations

Ron is a super-cute boy who is pretty much always putting himself down. He’s really cute when he gets angry and has the cutest thief costume ever. He appears in the 3rd game in the series.

Quina Quen FFIX

Quina – Final Fantasy IX

I love Quina. You may know this from my FFIX review. Throughout the game Quina is referred to as “s/he”. I personally read Quina as being female, but either way.

Seraph Digital Devil Saga 2

Seraph – Digital Devil Saga 2

SPOILERS: Seraph is a thing. Serph (male) and Sera (female) join together to form Seraph. The end result is pretty uh… cool. I guess.

Jenna Angel Digital Devil Saga

Jenna Angel – Digital Devil Saga

Angel is a strange character – she is the final boss of the first game, and in the second game you learn that she is also a he – Angel is the love interest of Gale’s true self and the genetic parent of Sera. Oh yes.

Vexen Organisation XIII Kingdom Hearts

Vexen – Kingdom Hearts

Vexen is a character that… I really like Vexen. He is batshit insane, but at the same time he’s one of the more sane members of Organisation XIII. The point here is, he looks like… a strange man or an ugly woman. Sorry Vexen. But he does tell Roxas “Tiny Steps for Tiny Minds” which is one of my favourite insults ever.

Got any suggestions? I’ll be happy to add them!

Trevor Pokemon Xand Y

Trevor – Pokémon X & Y

Suggested by Fellow Pokémon Enthusiast Julian Kay, Trevor is a true “what is it” character. How did such a strange sexless child/midget end up with such a manly name?
