Compared to Sacred Stones? Plays the same, in-game graphics are different. Better plot.
Best Character: For killing things? Oscar. Otherwise, Mordecai AKA “Big Blue Banzai”
OK, here’s a quick summary of the similarities and differences between Path of Radiance (GameCube) and Sacred Stones (GBA).
What is the same between Path of Radiance and Sacred Stones
- They’re both Fire Emblem games. You lead an army of people with colourful hair.
- The battle gameplay is exactly the same
- The character art is pretty much the same anime style art
What is the difference between Path of Radiance and Sacred Stones
- Different Plot, new characters etc.
- Support conversations happen outside of battle. Thank goodness!
- You can award characters “bonus exp” which is awesome. Depends on how well you performed in the last battle and stuff
- 3D battle graphics compared to 2D
- No possibility of level grinding. Once you’ve done a level, that’s it, you can’t revisit the area again. This makes sense however! In Sacred Stones, the land was being invaded by monster – in Path of Radiance, it’s just your army versus their army. Storywise it just doesn’t make sense to be going back anywhere
- This one has a sequel for the Wii
- No individual endings, what the fuck!
And now that’s out of the way here’s the best part
Ike is our protagonist. Like Prince Derp from Sacred Stones he has blue hair. He’s actually not as HurrDurr as Ephraim was. By the end of it he could dodge pretty much everything and hit everything critically.
Boyd is Ike’s best friend (I think). He starts out pretty strong, but by the end of the game he can’t hit anything for shit and compared to some other characters his defense is pretty low. However when he did hit things he was pretty good.
Elincia is our obligatory royal character. She’s a bit wet and you don’t actually get to use her until right near the end of the game, by which it’s a bit too late to make her useful enough to not die.
Mist is Ike’s little sister of indeterminant age. In the sprites she looks about 8 but in the cutscenes maybe 12? However she can have a romantic-ish support conversation with Boyd who… has to be in his late teens, at least…. so… Anyway, she was a healer and you basically had to make sure she didn’t die.
Oscar is Boyd’s older brother. He is HurrDurrTacular. Looks like the love-child of Kyle & Forde from Sacred Stones. At the start of the game he’s… actually pretty crap. But then he becomes a paladin and nothing will stop his quest for blood. Oliver sent me this very true picture:
Rhys was your traditional “White Mage” so we decided to bulk him up and make him as indestructable as possible. He ended up being able to defend himself and also take many souls for God by using white magic against his enemies (because he’s cool). Now that I think about it he looks kind of like this guy from Shadow Hearts:
Rolf is Oscar & Boyd’s youngest brother. He’s um, a little kid and you probably shouldn’t ever bring him anywhere if you don’t want him to die. I’m sure he could have been made to be useful but… once you get guys on horseback that can shoot arrows (Oscar as a Paladin for example) there really isn’t need for Rolf. Either way, he had A ranked support with Mist because little kids should have an arranged marriage.
Soren (not to be confused with Soreen) is a little brat who deserves a smack for his back-talking to his elders. Not to mention, looks like a weird child that Saleh & Knoll (from Sacred Stones) could have had together. Broke his knees someway through the game but still managed to give us battle reports. Mostly, I saw Soren as resembling Dante from Vampire Doll (who is also a little brat that needs a smack):
Titania is the sexy-lady paladin that you get from the start of the game. She looks like the produce of Seth (remember, our souless paladin from Sacred Stones?) and Tethys. Fire Emblem guys, please be a bit more creative with your character designs. Titania was the only one who wanted to kill things more than Oscar. Therefore we married her off to Rhys because he needed to learn how to kill in the name of God.
Astrid is a character who when you meet them is very very squishy. However, with time she becomes unstoppable and will do anything for blood. I hardly saw her get hit.
Bastian is a pretty good mage type you get quite late in the game. His speech patterns are… interesting (that is: no one talks like this). In love with both Geoffrey and Volke.
Brom is a simple man who would probably rather be farming than fighting. I like Brom. However, towards the end he was just a bit too clunky and prone to getting hit to be of much use.
Calill is some kind of hooker mage. She deals pretty sweet damage and hardly took any damage from magic attacks, but that didn’t help when you’re mostly fighting guys with swords that want to stab you. I imagine she could have been good friends with Bastian. They seemed… weird.
Devdan is the only light-skinned-but-clearly-supposed-to-be-black character in Fire Emblem and he speaks in 3rd person. This is a game about how racism is bad. But the only black character speaks like a stereotypical cotton-field worker from back in the days when slavery was okay. I never actually recruited him because I think someone killed him by accident.
Ena is a cute girl who can turn into a dragon. One of few people who can damage the final boss. It seems that she takes a lot more damage than enemy dragons do… However, that’s only when things hurt her, which didn’t happen often.
Gatrie was clunky and could never get hurt really. He liked cute girls, tried to chat up Astrid but she wasn’t interested. His aim was pretty bad, but when he hit something he hurt them a lot.
You have the option of letting him join you in the final level. He’s a cool guy that turns into a lion. I didn’t pick him (sorry).
Geoffrey is a rather squishy paladin who survived thanks to some miracle (that is, Haar saving his ass in one level). A bit DurrDurr and looks like what would happen if Ephraim and Innes (the princes from Sacred Stones) had a kid and he grew up.
Haar was a dragon rider guy who would rather sleep than do battle. That being said, he was one of the best fighters we had even though he only had one eye.
Ilyana is a mage with a tiny body who wants food because she’s hungry. We tried to get her to be in a relationship with Zihark, but she died and he was crap so… Also, she looks like the missing purple-haired Sailor Scout.
Janaff is a cutie little guy that turns into a bird. Pretty speedy – it’s generally quite hard to hit a bird.
Jill is the dragon rider you get before getting Haar – she is used to recruit him. She died promptly after this, where I felt a little bad. But her stats were very… average. Getting her to hit things was a bit of a challenge.
Kieran was a jerk who couldn’t hit to save his life and when he did, it was… dire… So I didn’t feel too bad letting him die.
Largo is this weird, funny, body-builder type guy. He’s normally the type of character I really like using, but you get him quite late in the game and I only used him about once. However it didn’t stop a hilarious conversation between him and Muarim where Largo’s basically like “Woah! Your muscles are awesome! You’re so manly!” Amazing.
Lethe AKA “Little Orange Banzai” is a girl who turns into a cat. She’s a bitch, but a very good party member – dodges nearly everything and hits back really hard. We tried to hoom her up with Muarim.
Lucia is Geoffrey’s sister and pretyt good at using a sword. Like Largo, would have liked to use her more, but never seemed to get around to it.
Makalov is.. what’s with this guy? I never recruited him (having not recruited the person you need to recuit him with…) but he ran away a lot. Yep.
Now, Marcia is who you need to recruit Makalov. I missed out on recruiting her because Ike was busy dicking around killing guys instead of going to talk to her. Yep.
Mia is hyperactive and a bit obsessed with fighting, but I rarely used her because she was squashy.
Mordecai is a man who is the size of a small mountain who transforms into a “Tiger”. Now, this “tigers” look exactly like Red XIII (who I named “Banzai”) from Final Fantasy VII. So we dubbed him “Big Blue Banzai”. He was just impossible to get past if he blocked the way, it was amazing.
Muarim was a really cool guy and also a Tiger. So he was “Big Green Banzai”. His backstory made me sad, but he made up for it by eating anything that got in his way.
Naesala is a jerk who you can use in the final level of the game. He’s a jerk so I didn’t use him.
Nasir is a mysterious guy who you can actually play as if you win a seemingly unwinnable battle. I didn’t get to play as him because I legitimatly thought it was unwinnable and ran away.
Nephenee is like Jill – her stats are very “okay”. However, Oliver says he managed to utilise her well and make her unkillable so there you go. Feel kind of bad because Shinon murdered her in cold blood.
Ranulf is a cute guy that turns into a cat – “Little Blue Banzai” if you will. He Was never quite as good as the other cats/tigers, but there you go.
Reyson AKA Heron is a bit of a jerk who turns into a heron. He is a special snowflake because he is the last of his race, or something. Oh, and he’s defenceless. BLOODY HERON.
Shinon is a total douche-bag. He’s an archer who’s pretty good and then he abandons you pretty soon after getting him. You can recruit him again but not with Ike (leader of the group) or Gatrie (his best friend) no but with ROLF who was not there. So instead of coming with us, we had to trap him in a corner and kill him Sorry dude.
Sothe is another little shit who decides to come with you. He’s a theif who is very squashy and basically can’t hurt anyone. Yep.
Stefan is a character you can recruit that I missed out on because I didn’t know he existed and either his house burnt down or I was trying not to die.
Tanith is a Pegasus Knight who is a bit of a bitch, but she is so useful because of her ability to summon other units. These units were often pretty good and you didn’t have to worry if they died. We were going t get her to marry Oscar and then they could kill things together.
Now, Tauroneo is another character you can recruit. However he starts out as a bad guy and I was buys trying to stay alive and didn’t really want to go near him or his guys.
I love Tibarn – you only get to use him in the last level, but he’s awesome. He turns into a bird and just murders everything. He’s Heron’s new boyfriend after Naesala sells him (not even kidding).
Tormod is a very little very squishy mage that you get. He is… his magic is fine but… using him without worrying about him dying…
Ulki is a rather scary looking bird-guy with a cute sounding name. Pretty much on par with Janaff.
Volke is a thief/assassin who is actually pretty good at getting criticals and killing things in one hit. He seems to always get followed around by Bastian.
Give it up for the worst character in the whole game! Zihark! Not only is he a pain in the ass to recruit, towards the end of the game he can basically not do any damage! Not to mention we were trying to get him to marry Ilyana and he just didn’t care when she died…
Who was your favourite character in this game?
