Time for something different around these parts!
I’m going to talk about my experience with this amazing console!
It shall include some mini-reviews of games I played on it as a kid.
Warning Nostalgia ahead!
We got a Mega Drive when I was what… five maybe? All my friends were playing Mario on the Nintendo, so I was well happy to finally have a games console of my very own!
The thing I remember most is this!
This is some kind of amazing cartridge that contained SIX GAMES! I have never ever seen something like this since. Especially since this version had some half decent games on it.
Streets of Rage
This is the only Mega Drive game I ever completed – I actually wrote a review of Streets of Rage, it is simply the best. The graphics were really good for the time, the multi-player was just so cool, and MAN the music that game had! Awesome!
Revenge of Shinobi
Revenge of Shinobi – what a game! You were a Ninja, you threw kicks, punches, stars – you used your Ninjusu to unleash awesome powers! You committed Seppuku and damaged your enemies as well! But man, that game was freaking hard. The first level has spikes of pain, the second level has some of the hardest jumping puzzles I have ever seen in a game (instant death if you fall) and I never did make it past the third level. Maybe I just sucked?
This was an amazing game! You got to choose to play as a Barbarian, a Dwarf or an Amazonian – your goal is to kill the evil Death Adder who killed your family (I think). Each had different special abilities and different health/speed/strength attributes. There were mounts – you could ride a dragon, or a weird… little… thing (seen above). I got to the final boss once, but never beat him – the final level has a pixel perfect jump that I rarely managed! What a good game.
Come on, you know this. Blocks fall, match colours, clear rows, blocks fall faster. I got quite good at this.
Super Hang On
I don’t know why, but I really really sucked at this game! I very rarely came first. I do remember that your bike could break and you could buy upgrades and stuff. However, I never won any money to do that with!
World Cup Italia ’90
I could never understand why so many people love Fifa. This was the only football game I ever played and it was crap! I remember the sliding animation was pretty funny.
Now, here are some games that we owned on separate cartridges! They range from great to “what do I do?”
I played this game LOADS. I never completed it – I couldn’t get past one particular level because I kept getting lost (somehow). I loved that you could play 2-player Co-operative and 2-Player competitive. So much fun! This game, along with Streets of Rage really defined my childhood gaming experience.
Sonic and Knuckles
This game was not as good as Sonic 2 – there was no multiplayer, but Knuckles could climb up walls and it was pretty cool! However, I sucked at this game – I never got past the third level – the bloody sand level!
The real aim of this game was the multiplayer – I never really played much of the single player. Multiplayer was all about blowing each other up, and getting the eggs (I don’t know what the creatures were called but we had a name for them that wasn’t the actual name). So much fun, dropping bombs down trap doors and having them come out were the other player is standing.
When I was a kid, I thought Strider was set in space. Looking back at screenshots, I realise that it’s set in Russia and we are killing Russians, not space men. The anti-Sovie propaganda totally flew past me! Seriously, they even use hammer and sickles against you. I could never get past the second level – it was so hard!
Space Harrier II
Oh my God this game was weird and also really difficult! You were running/flying through space(?) blasting weird ass monsters with lazers while avoiding getting hit by everything! I have no idea how far I managed to get in this game – not very far I’ll warrant!
Gods was a game I don’t really remember playing – I remember my dad playing it more. It involved puzzle solving and not getting killed by monsters – things a kid like me would have been no good at! I wouldn’t mind having a stab at it now – I have since learned that you are supposed to be playing as Hercules. Yeah!
I think we owned Lemmings? I have a feeling that I put it in and couldn’t figure out how to play…
We owned this game but I remember not even being able to get past the title screen! YEAH! I don’t even know what this is!
Special mention for a game I didn’t own
The reason I mention this game is that there have been tons of Sailor Moon games, but only one was released outside Japan – and even then only in one country: France. It just so happened that my French cousin owned this game. It was essentially a Streets of Rage type game – but it was really fun! Honestly, I would play this again!
What are your nostalgia games?
