Mario Kart: Super Circuit Review

Hi all – the last time I played a Mario Kart game it was for the N64. I was really good at it. So I gave Mario Kart: Super Circuit a try courtesy of Jules. Here are my thoguhts.

Mario Kart Super Circuit

Console: GBA
Best Racer: Wario – always Wario
Compared to Mario Kart 64? Very similar

First of all, before I even begin, I want to give a shout out to the guy that reviewed all 30 characters of the newest Mario Kart. It’s a really funny read. Also, Mario Kart 8 is the source of my new favourite meme: Luigi Death Stare:

That aside, this review is about the GBA Mario Kart.

Mario Kart Super Circuit Gameplay

This looks familiar

I’ll say this: the GBA is not the ideal platform for racing games. I find them hard to play without an analouge stick. The D-Pad makes controlling your kart a lot more difficult.

The game, as I mentioned is very similar to Mario Kart 64. For example, the characer roster is exactly the same.

Mario Kart Super Circuit Characters

Looks familiar

The power-ups are the same, heck, I’m sure the sounds effects are the same.

The main difference is there is a wider variety of tracks:

Mario Kart Super Circuit Beach

OK, pretty cool

And there are 5 cups instead of 4. Still, it feels quite familiar. Not to mention, due to the fact it’s on GBA, it doesn’t have as much “character” as Mario 64. You had to pretty much stay on the track. In Mario Kart 64 you could, to some extend, explore the level. For example, in Peach’s Castle – you could go right up to the Castle! There was no reason, and you would probably lose the race if you did, but it felt like a fully fleshed out world, were Super Circuit feels just like a set of race tracks. Which, I suppse, is the point. It’s a racing game, I get it.

Mario Kart 64 Peachs Castle

This is what I’m talking about

I feel that the game was still enjoyable, but not original enough to be considered a “step up” from Mario 64. I have a feeling the fact it’s on GBA had a lot to do with it.

Who is your favourite racer?
