Does anyone remember that I really didn’t like Sonic Rush? Well, thanks to a guy whose music is inspired by Sonic Rush I get to give a Sonic Advance review. Hooray!
Console: GBA
Better or worse than Sonic Rush? Way Way better
What about other Sonic games? Hard to say – I have a lot of nostalgia from Sonic 2, but I’d say this is on par with the single-player on that.
Sonic Advance was a really lovely game to play. The first Sonic game I played was Sonic 2. It’s the foundation for all my gaming.
Sonic Advance played very much like Sonic 2, but on a portable console. It was a delightful experience. It came with some very familiar levels:
And of course the familiar sound effects and music and what not.
Something really cool was that, like Sonic 2, you could choose your character! But! Moreso!
You know, afew months ago, searching “Sonic Tails Knuckles and Amy” in Google image search would have turned up mostly porn. But now it doesn’t! However, please have a link to this legit screenshot from the Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon it looks almost NSFW but it’s actually a real still. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, check this out. Don’t worry, I’m not linking out to Sonic porn – it’s easy enough to find that via Google.
Anyway, weird Google results aside: you can now play as Knuckles and Amy which is cool! All four characters have slightly different handling systems:
Sonic: Funny enough, was the fastest character, and could use his signature spin attacks. The easiest to play as.
Tails: Had his signature ‘flying’ ability. He can rise to a certain height before he falls. It’s useful but I often forgot it was there. Also, would like to point out that this was never copied by any other game ever:
Knuckles: Of course Knuckles could glide for a little while, and climb. He was very specific about which walls he was able to climb though. He can also float on water which banishes the worst part of Sonic games.
Amy Rose: Much like in Sonic R, Amy is the most difficult character to control. Where all the other characters can spin dash, she can’t. It makes getting up some steep slopes a big challenge for Amy. However, her ability to hit things with a hammer is very useful for boss battles.
I think the best thing about this game for me was the second to last boss, which happened to be the exact same as the first boss from Sonic 2, music included:
So, Sonic memories, anyone?

I loved all the Sonic Advance games. It felt a bit like even though the franchise was going south in terms of 3D games – the ones on the Gameboy Advance kept going strong. Big fan.
Agreed! Sonic Advance was a breath of fresh air in the fact that… it wasn’t trying to do too much different from the best games in the series!
